Elderberry Syrup

This would have been a staple in every grandmother’s home 100 years ago as the ultimate cold, flu, and cough syrup.  I intend to make it a household favorite again.  With SUCH an easy process and so incredibly affordable, Elderberry Syrup is the perfect remedy to have in your fridge at all times—especially during cold and flu season (moms, did you read that?). 

One of my clients used to always fall sick with flu’s and colds.  As an overstressed and successful person, she has zero downtime available for sickness, so high immunity is of upmost focus for me.  The very first thing we introduced into her diet was a custom formulated fermented vegetable for her to have with each meal.  Next was implementing adaptogenic and immune boosting tonics with her NATIVE meals, and lastly this custom remedy that I make for her and keep stashed in her fridge at all times.  Though she is very regular about taking a tablespoon on overstressed-under-slept days, whenever the twinkle of a cold might be presenting itself, she downs one tsp on the hour every hour.  I’ll also formulate salad dressings for her meals incorporating this syrup to sneak in immunity.  Tasty and effective.

ELDERBERRY SYRUP

cup organic elderberries

3.5 cups of water

2 T fresh ginger root

2 sticks cinnamon

¼ c raw apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup raw honey

PROCESS | add water, elderberries, ginger, and cinnamon to pot.  Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer for 45 minutes (until the water has reduced to about half).  Strain mixture through fine mesh strainer or milk bag and squeeze every last drop out of the berries.  Leave on counter until liquid cools to room temperature, and then add honey and apple cider vinegar.  Keep in fridge where it will last quite some time.

A wonderful addition to add spice, warm up your body, promote detoxification, and activating your lymphatic system is cayenne.  I add this to my personal batch.  I also don't add any sweeter to my personal batch as I have a pretty developed palate for pungent tastes.
