Digestive Aids

As we gear up for a much-anticipated feast tomorrow and the always-inevitable ultra full feeling that is sure to follow, here are a few old-school natural digestive aids that are already in your kitchen and bar!

FERMENTS | are my end-all-be-all if you’ve read any articles in the past!  A few very simple reasons for this are because of their potent enzymes that help to break down your food faster, their ability to extract and absorb more vitamins and minerals from the foods they are eaten with, all while helping to promote healthy gut flora.  A true superstar all around.  I have two tablespoons with every meal!  Great sources of these include cultured vegetables, kimchi, natto, and cultured dairy.

BITTERS | take a note from the French and start your meal off with an aperitif, or for the non-drinker a few dashes of bitters in sparkling water!  Many aperitifs contain bitters which get the salivary glands producing so that the stomach starts secreting juices.  The brain then relays to the digestive tract—liver, pancreas, and the intestines—to release the hormone gastric, which increases gastric acid and bile flow.  All resulting in an easier digestive experience.  A bitter hoppy beer will also result in the same effect.

So you’re killing two birds with one stone when it comes to drinking that fancy cocktail tomorrow.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR IN WATER | 1 tablespoon diluted in 8 oz of water fifteen minutes before eating stimulates your digestive juices to better break down food.  Raw A.C.V contains magical minerals and trace elements, LDL cholesterol lowering pectin, fat burning acetic acid, anti-viral malic acid, live enzymes, and amino acids that make for a wonderful force against heavier, hard-to-digest meals.  Drinking this regularly, before each main meal, improves digestion and you naturally begin assimilating more from your food!

It’s also a massive beauty tonic, immune booster, and potent force against Candida and helping to normalize intestinal bacteria.
