Beauty Basics | HydraFacial + Sugaring + Brows

So rarely in my life do I source out professionals when it comes to beauty, for I’m pretty tomboy about it all. I do my own nails—meaning I clip and file them. Half the time, I trim my own hair. If I can do it, I usually do. But there are three people I could not live without and certainly couldn’t do their trades myself. They are my vitals. My beauty gurus if you will.

HYDRAFACIAL | Dr John Diaz and Ursula Berninzon

Not only is Ursula one of my oldest friends in LA, whom I consider a sister, but she has always been my go to for any beauty questions—especially anti-aging. She is literally a beauty encyclopedia. From the best SPF to the best home remedies, so it was only fate that she partnered up with the most talented Dr. Diaz and they launched their own skincare line. On top of that, I’m OBSESSED with their HydraFacial. Ursula explains a little more about it.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A HYDRAFACIAL AND WHAT IS ALL THE HYPE ABOUT

The HydraFacial is a medical grade resurfacing treatment that exfoliates the skin and extracts impurities as well as infuses the skin with moisture and antioxidants.

The HydraFacial is considered a breakthrough in aesthetic technology because as it removes dead skin cells and impurities while it simultaneously infusing hydration, antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid.   Some other notable qualities are that it is suitable for all skin types and results are immediate.

MY FAVORITE PART OF THE TREATMENT WAS KNOWING SO MANY ANTIOXIDANTS WERE ABSORBED BY MY SKIN. CAN YOU TELL US WHICH ANTIOXIDANTS ARE USED AND HOW THEY BENEFIT THE SKIN

The antioxidant rich solution used in the HydraFacial treatment contains Vitamin A, E, white tea extract, horse chestnut seed extract, and rosemary leaf extract.  These ingredients help to protect your skin from free radicals and environmental damage.

I FIND REGULAR FACIALS TO NOT BE NEARLY AS NOTICABLE AND BENEFICIAL AS THIS ONE, THOUGH THEY ARE CLOSE IN PRICE. WHY IS THAT

The HydraFacial detoxifies, hydrates, and protects your skin so it encompasses a lot more than most basic facials do.  We like to keep our prices competitive and raise the bar when it comes to customer service.  Thanks for noticing!

HOW OFTEN DO YOU SUGGEST CLIENTS HAVE THIS TREATMENT

To achieve and maintain healthy radiant skin, we recommend a monthly HydraFacial.

FAVORITE BEAUTY TIPS TO KEEP YOU GLOWING EACH DAY BETWEEN TREATMENTS

Dr. Diaz and us gals at the Skin Care Clinic are big believers of exfoliating your skin to keep acne at bay, even skin tone and to diminish the appearance of fine lines.  My favorite skin polisher is Exfoliate by Dr. John Diaz.

FAVORITE INTERNAL WAY TO HYDRATE

Drinking copious amounts of water.

I’M OBSESSED WITH YOUR VITAM C AND E SERUM. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT IT

Renew is one of our most popular products and we are so glad that you like it!  Renew serum contains vitamins C and E with Ferulic Acid.  This is a potent and clinically proven formula that increases collagen production, fights free radicals and provides protection against sun damage.  This product is a must for anyone that wants to improve the appearance of their skin or who wants to maintain their HydraFacial glow.

FAVORITE BEAUTY SNACK TO KEEP YOU GOING THROUGH THE DAY

My personal favorites are raw cashews, brown rice cakes and fresh berries.

SUGARING | Misty Gilman

My friend and super natural sister, Daniela Moreno, turned me onto sugaring. And rightfully so, as it has changed my life. Nobody is more pro in the game than Misty. Here she shares some insight into the whole process.

WHAT IS SUGARING

Sugaring is an eco-friendly form of hair removal. A paste made of sugar, lemon, and water is molded onto the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth…then is flicked off the skin taking the hair out by the root in it’s natural direction of growth. This result is smooth silky skin, with less irritation. Sugaring can be performed on any part of the body or face.

WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE FINDING IT TO BE SUPERIOR TO WAXING

There are so many things that make sugaring so wonderful. I think the biggest difference being that since we are taking the hair out in the direction it grows, there is no rip against on the follicle. The hairs are extracted from the very root without any breakage, giving you a longer period of time with smooth skin before new growth and less ingrown hairs.

Since the sugar paste is just over body temperature, instead of being hot it is less irritating to the skin.

Another pro to sugaring is that it will never “accidently” take live skin with hair. Since the sugar paste is water based, and so are your live skin cells they won’t stick to each other. This means that with a sugaring service you are only having dead skin cells, and hair removed. Sometimes with wax, which is resin based you may have live skin lifted during the process.

WHAT MADE YOU GRAVITATE TOWARD SUGARING

I have very sensitive skin myself, after a wax I would be red for days. After getting certified in sugaring and knowing all of the pro’s to this method I couldn’t imagine going back to waxing.

I also love sugaring because I get to be up moving around all day, and catch up with all of my lovely clients during their appointments.

PREPARATIONS YOU’D SUGGEST TO CLIENTS NEW TO THIS TREATMENT

The better condition your skin is in before your first hair removal experience, the easier it’s going to be for you! Make sure your skin is moisturized. Coconut oil is a great way to keep the skin in good condition. With that being said, no moisturizer on the actual day you are coming in for an appointment, for it acts as a barrier to the sugar paste.

Exfoliating is also very important. Scrub, scrub, scrub those dead skin cells off. Using a bath glove or mitt is a really easy way to do this gently everyday…but again, no scrubbing the day you are coming to get sugared.

TOP TIPS TO KEEP FROM GETTING INGROWN HAIRS AND PROPER CARE BETWEEN TREATMENTS

Same as prepping for first-timers!

Exfoliating and moisturizing are so important. If the skin has a build up of dead/dry skin it’s very difficult for a new hair to break through that barrier. Moisturize daily, weird but yes even on the bikini, and exfoliate. I think using a mitt or glove and physically scrubbing works even better than a grainy body scrub product.

FAVORITE BEAUTY DRINK

Green Juice, yumm!!

Cucumber, celery, kale, green apple, and lemon

BEST ANTI-AGING SECRET

Keep your skin hydrated!!! Drink water, and moisturize with lotion. Nothing ages faster than dry and dehydrated skin. And wear sun screen to protect your face everyday!

 BROWS | Karen Kubeck

Karen has been in my life since my very first year in LA, at age 19. Nobody has seen me shift and make as many changes as Karen. You could almost call her my LA mom as she’s really watched me grow up and she’s given me sound advice along the way. On that note, I’ve never let another single person touch my eyebrows since Karen resurrected them from the awful hands of my teenage years and tweezers. She is the eyebrow goddess. For anyone in need of thick, full Brooke Shield brows, this is your lady.
