HEALING MUSHROOM TONIC

Who isn't obsessed with the Reishi Cappuccino from Erehwon’s Tonic Bar? Well, once again, Christine Della Cioppa is here to share her own twist on this fabulous recipe allowing us to reach deeper health benefits.

C | Some of the most important herbs in my opinion are in the mushroom family.

A few years ago I came across a Mycologist named Paul Stamets and was amazed at what he had to say about them. Paul talks about the benefits of medicinal mushrooms not only for our bodies but for our planet as well. He did some research with the Mycellium, or root system of the mushrooms which he refers to as the “internet of the forest”. When added to soil that was corrupted by a petroleum spill, the mycelium converted the toxic soil back into a life giving eco system in just a few weeks. Just imagine the implications of that! Besides this there has been extensive studies done on the benefits of these medicinal mushrooms and the findings are quite profound.

Reishi | is something I take daily and has been revered in Chinese medicine for thousands of years as both an immune modulator and a longevity herb. Reishi is an adaptogen for the immune system meaning that it has the ability to both balance and fine tune the immune system. It  can regulate immune function whether there is an auto immune condition or an immune deficiency. I have warded off years of flu seasons by taking this herb and just the same I have recommended it to many people who have allergies and they have had amazing results when nothing else seemed to work. Reishi is also known to be a powerful anti-stress herb. According to some ancient texts, it is said to have the ability to open the heart, calm the spirit and connect you to your higher self, supporting wisdom and spiritual insight.

Chaga | is another amazing mushroom that grows on Birch trees. It is considered by many to be a powerful adaptogen and longevity herb, because of its incredibly high antioxidant content. It is also beneficial for the immune system and some studies even suggest that it triggers apoptosis in the mitochondria of cancer cells!

Cordyceps | is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and can be especially useful for those of us living in Los Angeles because of its affect on strengthening the function of the lungs. It can benefit those with decreased immune function or those recovering from illness, times of great stress or for those who are just generally fatigued. Also it is known as the athletes herb since it can support the structural integrity of the skeletal system, as well as enhance endurance and help build muscles. Like the others, it has been shown to have a great affect on the immune system as well.

All of these mushrooms are fantastic! Another amazing herb is Gynostemma or (Jiao Gu Lan) which we are using as the base of this tonic. This is one of my favorite herbs as it has so many double directional properties. For example it is calming when one is over excited and energizing when you feel fatigued but is neither a stimulant nor a sedative. It also can help raise or lower cholesterol, help under weight people gain weight and over weight people lose weight. It is immune regulating and can aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients from food. It also has a pleasantly sweet taste which makes it a nice base for any tonic.

The coconut oil and hemp seeds | help to give it a creamy texture and trust me, you will want to add a hint of sweetness since the mushrooms tend to be quite bitter! I use stevia just because I try to avoid getting any extra sugar in my diet. If you like, a tablespoon of raw cacao powder will accompany these herbs quite nicely and will help give you a little boost to get you through the day. Enjoy!
