Skin Dosha Ayurveda

Skin types vary immensely.  However, a great way to get a comprehensive hold on what might benefit your specific skin is by using your Ayurvedic dosha as your guide. This 5,000 year-old Indian holistic system is categorized by three Doshas (a Sanskrit word that means "mind-body constitution") Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Every single person that I hold dear, fit their dosha skin type to a T.  Take me a Vata—anxiety prone, dry, and clear.  Where Ryan is a Kapha—slow moving, oily, with larger pores.  And though you embody characteristics of other doshas, knowing your skin’s primary dosha can be a great resource for working synergistically with it to aid in healing, prevent aging, and maintain your glow.

SKIN DOSHAS | THE CRASH COURSE

VATA | dry and thin skin with a tendency to dehydrate quickly—especially in the winter months.  Occasional breakouts are not too red or inflammatory, and out of all the doshas, Vata is the most susceptible to signs of aging.  Lips and fingernails tend to be somewhat pale due to poor circulation.

Due to thinner skin, Vatas benefit from protection and nourishment.  Wonderful tools for Vatas are:  hats, great sunscreen, raw shea butter, avocado oil, untoasted sesame oil, aloe vera gel or juice, rose geranium hydrosol and oil.   Ashwagandha is also a great herb to take as it helps the Vata gut absorb nutrients better, making the skin look younger and less wrinkled.

It’s best to avoid anything too stimulating, energizing, or invigorating (topically) such as Vitamin C, ginger, or caffeine.  

PITTA | skin leans towards combination, with a lot of heat in their complexion.  Rosacea, redness, broken capillaries, skin rashes, eczema, and age spots are common issues Pitta complexions struggle with. 

Due to heat, Pittas benefit from soothing support.  Such as:  non-drying cleanser, chamomile, yogurt, turmeric, aloe vera, jojoba oil, and during times of redness coconut oil for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties (all topically).  Also consuming turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil, and rose petal jam are wonderful to keep skin inflammation at bay.

It’s best to avoid anything too stimulating for this one as well, such as vitamin C and ginger—which dilate the capillaries and increase blood flow therefore resulting in redness.

KAPHA | this complexion is often thick, oily, resilient, with larger pores and breakouts that tend to be deep, painful, and cystic.  However, they so luckily hold off the signs of aging much longer than the other two doshas. 

This skin type benefits greatly from invigorating ingredients such as ginger, ginseng, caffeine, untoasted sesame oil and exfoliating on a regular basis to keep circulation moving and to prevent dullness.  Consuming spicy foods to stimulate their digestion and metabolism is suggested while avoid heavy, oily foods for these slow digestion and promote more oiliness in skin.
