BALANCING ELECTROLYTES :: THE BASICS
Over the last few years, the majority of my intensive, deep healing protocols have been concentrated around detoxing. Far Infrared Sauna, Detox Baths, Colonics, Coffee Enemas, BioMat sessions. All of which are very dehydrating and involve sweating, sweating, and more sweating. I thought that I was being diligent with my water intake, constantly drinking up to 3 liters a day, even “electrolyte enhanced” water, just to replenish all that was lost during those sessions. I was wrong. I needed more than just amped up water. I was in dire need of even more minerals. All resulting in a very severe electrolyte imbalance.
WHAT ARE ELECTROLYTES
Our bodies conduct electricity. Electrolytes are the minerals that help to conduct these electric activities throughout the body. They are absolutely essential for everything from muscle contractions, to keeping our heart beating, nerve transmissions, to maintaining fluid balance, + a certain level of blood alkalinity.
CAUSES FOR IMBALANCE
When we sweat, we lose water but also many vital minerals including sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorous, + magnesium. Other ways we can lose these minerals are from dehydration, excessive exercise, use of diuretic medications, poor diet, malabsorption of minerals, kidney disfunction, prolonged vomiting, diarrhea, and high fever. In addition, drinking too much water too quickly can lead to a very dangerous depletion called Hyponatremia, or water intoxication, where you’ve basically diluted any existing electrolytes.
SYMPTOMS OF IMBALANCE
Symptoms of electrolyte imbalance are directly influenced by which particular electrolyte is deficient. Overall symptoms can include extreme fatigue, headaches, nausea, dizziness, experiencing confusion, poor memory, irritability, constipation, achy joints + muscles, and excessive muscle spasms. The severity of the symptoms depends on the severity of the imbalance.
MY SUGGESTIONS TO RE.BALANCE
***Something quite important that I’ve learned throughout my detox + electrolyte adventures is that when water is combined with electrolytes the body will actually hydrate more quickly and thoroughly, as water follows the path of electrolytes to where it is needed.***
HIMALAYAN PINK SALT
Himalayan Sea Salt is packed with essential minerals + trace elements. Not only does it help to re.balance electrolytes, it supports proper nutrient absorption, aids in detoxification, and balances pH. ***I like to take a pinch under my tongue both in the morning + at night before bed. Along with putting a pinch in my water bottle to sip throughout the day.***
RAW COCONUT WATER
Raw Coconut Water has a really brilliant balance of electrolytes that actually mimics our blood’s electrolyte balance. Perfect for post work out.
Lately I have also been turning to an electrolyte powder as I am still in heavy detox mode with my protocols and have started to exercise more frequently. My favorite right now is Ultima Replenisher. It has all the essentials without the high sugar content. Is super absorbable, helps me replenish quickly, and I take it with me in my bag so I have it on the go.
KEEPING UP with FRUITS + VEGETABLES
Food will always be the foundation for all health and the following are my top picks to keep in heavy rotation if you’ve been ill, are working out regularly, or are cleansing + detoxing: Apples, bananas, lemons, limes, oranges, avocados, beets, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, tomatoes, and leafy greens such as spinach, kale, rainbow chard, + beet greens. Raw + unprocessed nuts are also high in electrolytes: almonds, cashews, walnuts, pistachios, sunflower seeds + pumpkin seeds.
RE.BALANCING ELECTROLYTE DRINK
This is my go-to on days when I feel especially symptomatic and it works very quickly.
• 1/2 C freshly squeezed Lemon Juice
• 2 C spring water
• 1 T Apple Cider Vinegar
• 1 scoop Electrolyte Powder
• 1/8 tsp Pink Salt
Blend + enjoy slowly
