With this being the last New Moon of the year, Friday's New Moon in Sagittarius invites us to reflect back on 2015 and see if we have been living in alignment with the desires of our Highest Self. The microcosmic firey sign of Sagittarius ignites the fire within our microcosm, our heart, propelling us toward the visions of our destiny. But in order to hear beyond the intense flickering flames and feel the calm, steady burning desire, we have to become quiet enough to see, hear, or feel what our hearts truly want.
The spirit of Sagittarius has many sides but most inspiring is the energy of wisdom it brings in way of freedom, highest intentions, and supportive friendships. It’s a time where we support one another in fulfilling our dreams and get excited about helping each other. There’s so much competition in this world which is completely unnecessary because that stems from a fear-based experience within thinking that there is not enough to go around. Whenever I am feeling jealous or competitive towards someone, I always reach out to them or support them in some way. Of course the ego alarm goes off and the chest clenches, but the real practice - the real yoga practice or spiritual practice - is not on the mat or cushion but in moments like this when in the fire of the ego we break through and come out stronger. Whenever I am feeling anxious about someone who seems more successful than I, I almost always make an effort to connect with them and support them - either by buying their product or attending their event. In the end, we all want to be respected and supported. But it begins within - what we want from others, we HAVE to give ourselves. If we want others to support our visions and dreams, we have to support others and help their dreams come true, in whatever way we can. This kind of connection and support can also open the doors for unexpected friendships or collaborations, especially in the cosmology of sagittarius, which is know for fusion and connecting the dots.
The fire energy of Sagittarius also sparks inspiration in places we may feel stuck. I know this one all too well. Sometimes it's easy to get overwhelmed by the massive to-do list; and rather than feeling inspired to complete it, we get bogged down by anxiety, which is really just a feeling that we experience when we have already predicted failure. This New Moon in Sagittarius is a great time to just write that big to-do list down and use the fiery energy to burst through with enough power and enough energy to complete everything you need to. I was totally feeling this way this week between final exams, article deadlines, orders backlogged, moving into a new studio, traveling to LA and back, and so on. Whew! But I realized, okay, I need energy and I need power to feel like I am able to complete all of these things so I can finish out the year strong and feel as though I completed everything to the absolute best of my ability.
In need of more power and more energy to finish out the year strong, I found myself pulled to practice an incredible Kundalini meditation called the Maha Shakti meditation. I highly suggest, on the New Moon, to write out your to-do list or intentions of everything you want to complete for 2015. Afterwards, with the space around you set up for a New Moon ritual (candles, sage, meditation cushion, alter, whatever you have to make it feel powerful!), dive into 11 minutes of the Maha Shakti meditation. The musical version for the mediation is Adi Shakti by Gurudass which can easily be found on spotify - and I listen to this ALL day whenever I feel I need more power! I cannot emphasize enough how strong and graceful it will make you feel in a matter of minutes. I’ll leave you with a quote about this mediation to ignite your New Moon inspiration:
"Sing it today as a special gesture to the Maha Shakti. Merge in it. This is enough to take away your misfortune. This will carve out of you a woman. Woman needs her own Shakti, not anybody to it. Today let all the past die and let prosperity live. Let you die and let your power live.…Woman is not born to suffer, and woman needs her own power. This is a Maha Shakti mantra. Just utter it once and see what it does. - Yogi Bhajan
