DIY SUMMER TONER + POST-SUN HYDRATING MASK
How I adore DIY skin care. Especially when it’s completely 100% edible and crafted with ingredients that I am also using daily in my smoothies, tonics, and elixirs. Revitalization and healing at its most powerful from the inside out and from the outside in.
Summer is in full swing with the sun enveloping us in her warmth, which is a welcoming time for many, but one that can also leave our skin overheated and craving refreshment. While I’m much more careful these days about my sun soaks than in my younger years, I still love to indulge. There is something just so therapeutic about pure sunshine. And careful soaking is crucial for keeping my Vitamin D levels optimal for continued healing on my Lyme journey. So while I usually allow myself 15 minutes of sunscreen-less sun time both before 10am and after 3pm, the time in between is most certainly slathered and protected with my favorite natural brands.
I also am sure to have these two refreshing + rejuvenating DIY treatments on hand. The first is my antioxidant-rich, super hydrating toner - I make one to keep in my fridge for an extra cooling mist, and one to keep in my purse or beach basket. The second treatment is my end-of-the-day skin savior mask that is packed with amazing superfoods, and is hydrating, anti-inflammatory, and wonderfully calming for overheated skin.
SUMMER TONER | WHITE TEA + ALOE VERA
• 3 White Tea bags
• Aloe Vera Juice (I prefer the George’s brand for its non-sour taste)
• Spritzer bottle
After steeping the tea, I let it cool. I then combine equal parts tea and Aloe Vera Juice in a small mister bottle. White Tea is the least processed of the teas and is actually much higher in antioxidants than green tea. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which help to reduce redness and even out skin tone. Aloe Vera is a supremely hydrating, calming, + healing. If kept in the fridge, this toner can be exceptionally refreshing after a long day. You can also mist throughout the day to revive your skin. Each batch usually lasts 7-10 days.
POST-SUN HYDRATING + HEALING MASK
• 1T Raw Local Honey
• 1/2 t Colostrum
• 1/2 t Chlorella
Mix ingredients together. Mist with a little bit of White Tea + Aloe Toner for desired consistency. Apply evenly onto face, neck, and decollate and let sit for 20 minutes. The honey is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and is an amazing hydrator. Cleanser Tip: I love to swap out my regular cleanser and use just honey to cleanse a few nights a week. It’s also a great exfoliator! Colostrum’s antibiotic and anti-viral properties, when applied topically, are hugely healing, especially for sunburned or irritated skin. It is also an anti-inflammatory, helping to calm and tone. Chlorella, the single cell green algae, packed with chlorophyll, is a nutrient dense powerhouse. It is full of antioxidants, Vitamins A, C, E, and essential fatty acids that infuse the skin with nutrients and help to reduce inflammation. It has also been proven to speed up cell + tissue regeneration, as well as improve skin’s elasticity. These 3 beautiful ingredients mixed together make for a stunning mask that leave your skin soft, hydrated, even-toned, plump, and brightened.
