Most people here know about my love for bone broth. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t drink one cup on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, for it’s played an INSTRUMENTAL role in healing my hormones (noticeably by reducing bloating surrounding pms). You’ve read about my recipe here. And its magical properties surrounding pregnancy here. But like my dear friend Suzanne Hall says, “keep running stories on dry body brushing until everyone is dry body brushing.”
So who more brilliant to refresh our memeroy on the benefits of bone broth than Kundalini wonder and herbal skincare goddess Desiree Pais of Benshen.
D | I consider myself extremely lucky to be surrounded by some of the world’s most incredible healers. My teacher Chris Chen, an acupuncturist and long-time student of Daoist Grandmaster Sung Baek, is constantly turning me on to all things powerfully nourishing and healing to the body. I remember when I first met him I couldn’t stop admiring how radiant his skin was and how strong he looked, at a time when I felt like I was falling apart due to auto-immune and chronic fatigue. Amongst the many ways Chris has taken to reach his level of vitality, when I first began studying with him I never saw him without a thermos of broth. Curious, I began to do some research on broth and how something so simple could be so powerful.
Broth has become recognized as the ultimate superfood. Its power lies in its ability to heal the lining of the digestive tract. All health, wellness, and vitality come from a strong digestive system. This is also the foundation of a strong immune system and balanced nervous and endocrine systems. If our digestive system is not functioning properly, we’re not able to retrieve the nutrients from the food we eat, which extends to our bodies to not being able to perform its many, many functions.
Our modern diet is carbohydrate, refined sugar, and processed food filled (yes, those “health bars” are processed), which weakens our digestive system. On top of that, the amount of stress we endure daily further hampers our bodies, and especially our digestive system’s ability to function properly. A modern diet, along with improper food combining, in addition to high levels of stress, weakens our digestive system. As a result, our health declines, we begin to age faster, and we lose our radiance and vitality.
Enter broth. The reason this golden liquid has so many healing properties is due to its ability to heal the digestive system and encourage the proper assimilation of nutrients, most importantly protein, which contains amino acids, the basic building blocks of hormones, muscles, bones, joints…essentially everything in the human body. Without enough protein or proper protein assimilation, these vital nutrients are not used by the body - causing it to work harder to repair itself, which leads to more stress and damage to the system as it uses its own resources to try to rebuild cells and tissues.
Most importantly, broth is rich in minerals and healing compounds like collagen, glutamine, glycine, and proline. All of these help heal the gut lining and allow the digestive system to rebuild itself. The abundance of easily absorbable minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and others help to reduce inflammation throughout the entire body. So as the digestive tract gets healed, our body is able to assimilate nutrients and use them as the building blocks for the entire body. Our hormones can function properly, which keeps us young and vibrant. Our immune system capacity will increase, allowing us to be strong and healthy. Inflammation levels will decrease, leading to clear skin, relief of chronic body pains, and relief from allergies.
The reason broth is holding space in the spotlight is because of how easy it is to get such powerful nutrition daily. All it takes is drinking 1-2 cups of broth each day to begin to see numerous benefits throughout your entire body. It’s best to drink broth first thing in the morning, as well as before each meal as to not dilute the digestive acids in the stomach while it’s digesting the other food you eat during that mean. Or, if you really want radiant health, clear skin, flexible joints, a strong digestive, immune, and nervous systems, take a thermos of broth with you to go and drink it throughout the whole day. You can also cook with it in any recipe that calls for water! Talk about sneaking your nutrients in. Whether it’s just one cup a day or drinking broth until the evening, you can’t go wrong with this nourishing liquid gold.
To incorporate more broth into your diet, you can easily make your own at home or for those New Yorkers on here, Chris, along with fellow acupuncturist Heidi Lovie, launched their own bone broth company, Simple Broth, which is my absolute favorite source of broth around town.
